Gilmore girls: Season 1 Episode 6 Rory's Birthday Parties

Wow. I can't believe it's been months since my last episode post. That was not the plan. But I suppose life got in the way. Work got a tad busier, I started actually doing things around my home to organize and clean, and dealing with anxiety just all have taken over. We all know how crazy the world is right now, but I am trying to get back to this. I refuse to let it fall to the side. I have been wanting to do this for years. So here we go... Rory's Birthday Parties.

Who doesn't want to go around their rich grandparent's house and put post-its on the stuff they want when they kick it? This always cracked me up. (Spoiler alert) But, as we know, in the revival Richard is gone and Emily sells the house. What happens to all of that stuff they put post-its on? I have wondered since the revival.

So...Rory's 16th birthday. 1. It's especially evil for Emily to insist that Rory miss spending her birthday with her friends and 2. In the pilot, she's apparently 16. But she wasn't. This episode is when she TURNS 16.

Jackson and his overalls make me miss overalls. Can I start wearing overalls again? The '90s are in again, right? Did overalls come back and I missed it? They were so comfortable. I LIVED in overalls. Especially when I broke my foot and nothing else besides shorts would fit over my cast. I had a pair of shorts overalls AND huge TLC style baggy long overalls. I am going to dream of overalls tonight...

Okay, so when Lorelai gets home she sits down at the table and cuts an apple to eat. Not so weird to most people, but in a future episode when Lorelai thinks she's pregnant and she sees an apple and eats it she mentions how fruit is not her thing and she doesn't get a "hankering" for them. She also says the last time she craved an apple was when she was pregnant with Rory. But here she is....eating an apple in front of a HUGE bowl of apples on the kitchen table. She's also wearing a HUGE ring on her left hand. Why not her right? Just weird.

One of the best scenes is the scene where Lorelai and Emily go shopping for Rory's birthday present. Does Lorelai think that a pink guitar purse is something Rory would like at 16? I mean, Rory's not THAT goofy. Maybe when she was 10? But I suppose it's better than anything else Emily mentions. But Lorelai's laugh at the end of the scene is gold. Emily jumps saying something about the bracelets lighting up and you can tell that Lauren is actually laughing at Kelly. It's cute.

It's funny that Luke asks Lorelai to marry him just to shut her up. So Luke DOES actually propose first. haha While I understand that Rory didn't want to ruin Lorelai's happy moment after shopping with her mom, you would think that, as close as they are, she would tell her anyway about the kids being invited to her party.

Is Lorelai's old bedroom supposed to be the same one that Rory stays in later in the series? She spends the night a few times (also lives in there at one point) and the room is different. The door is in another spot and I don't think there is a fireplace.

Is it just me or is it weird that when Rory and Paris run into each other at the college fair, Paris is wearing Harvard colors and Rory is wearing Yale's? Coincidence? They are rivals wearing rival school colors. Interesting....

For her birthday, Rory gets the computer I wanted back then. I remember being so jealous. It was the Mac iBook in turquoise with a handle. So fancy. haha When Emily and Richard show up, Lorelai mentions to Sookie that they have never been to the house and that they would come to Stars Hollow occasionally when Rory was little and they lived at the inn. However, in a later episode when Emily comes to the inn with Rory, she acts like she has never been there and has never seen the little house/shed they lived in? Seems unlikely.

I will leave you on this note: Why would anyone start a food fight in their own home? Too much to clean up!

Gilmore girls: Season 1 Episode 5 Cinnamon's Wake

It's been longer than I wanted between posts, but the last couple of weeks have flown by! But here it is! Cinnamon's wake. This one isn't too exciting. Not a lot of thoughts on this one. A bit random with the structure of my words but it might be best read along with the episode.

Opening Friday night dinner scene.

I have to go with Lorelai on this one. Who wants to go to a funeral of someone they don't know or remember? Not me! I don't like funerals in general. Who wants to deal with that? But Emily's nazi joke was spot on and we get what seems like a genuine laugh (not an acting laugh) out of Alexis (Rory).

Did Rory really think that Lorelai was going to bake? How does she not automatically think Lorelai was getting Sookie to do it. I mean, we all knew this when we watched originally, right?

Here we have Max asking Lorelai out for the first time. I understand that he seems intriguing and he's nice and interested, but really he's the most boring of all of Lorelai's love interests in the end. He never challenges her except to be macho against Luke in a future episode and what he sees as his property. Even with this first exchange between them, I never saw them going it the long term.

In the next scene, Lane and Rory are walking down the street towards the market. Rory wants to go in without Lane and to Lane, this should have been obvious and clear as to why. She has already told Rory that "the new kid" had been asking about her. But when Lane walks away calling her a freak I always thought that was strange. If she would have made a face and said something like "weird" it would have made more sense. But it has always bugged me the way she calls her a freak. It's her best friend and the way she says it is as if it is her mortal enemy.

Kirk finally as Kirk. But still what doesn't make sense is that Kirk has grown up there. He should know who Patty is and Patty should know who he is. Especially since, in later episodes, we find out he was in Miss Patty's dance classes as a kid. I think Kirk has the biggest arc over the series as anyone. I guess less of an arc and more of a change in character. From random characters to Kirk who is new, to Kirk who everyone knows and has lived his whole life in Stars Hallow. But he's still one of my favorite characters and I love Sean Gunn. I am so glad they brought him on for a regular character. Stars Hallow wouldn't be the same without him.

Lorelai and Max meet up in a coffee shop. I remember when it first aired I was all for her dating Max and most of it was because of this scene. But now, as I watch it in a different frame of mind for this blog, I see how not exciting this scene is and how normal of a person Max is. I guess that is the point. Max does grow on you. He's attractive, intelligent, and is nice to Lorelai. But when it comes to forever, I never thought they would make it. Lorelai needs more excitement in her life.

Stars Hollow doesn't have a regular grocery store, but they have an animal hospital? A vet, sure, but a full animal hospital? Doubtful. But poor Cinnamon. However, if Lorelai REALLY was interested in Max, even with the wake for Cinnamon, I don't think she would have forgotten their date. Which should have been an indicator of how she truly feels.

I can see where Rory would be upset about Max and Lorelai. I am not sure how I would have felt when I was a teenager if my mom had been single and met a single teacher. Although, I can't imagine her having dated any of the teachers I had except MAYBE one of them. The rest of them were old and crotchety for the most part. And if she had dated that one teacher, I probably would have been proud of her because all the girls on campus had a crush on him. They all would have been jealous.

Lorelai, Lorelai, Lorelai.... with as careful as she is with what she tells her mother, how in the world did she tell her they were at a cat wake when she told her she wouldn't go to her distant family funeral?? Hand smack to forehead.

But honestly, I would love to live in a town where everyone was so close that the old cat in town is so beloved that they get together for a wake when the cat dies. Something just seems so odd and wonderful about that.

Clearly, Rory didn't really have a problem with Lorelai dating Max (especially now that she can relate to Lorelai's feelings), just that she didn't tell her. Which is ironic since she clearly likes Dean but is keeping that from Lorelai.

Gilmore girls: Season 1 Episode 4 The Deer Hunters

The Deer Hunters. One of my favorite episodes. Although, not a lot in this episode to dissect so this will be mostly just my thoughts.

We begin at the office supply store. I have always been part Rory and part Lorelai. I would have had a very specific list (with reasons why I need 3 highlighters), but I would have gone for the festive purple paper pad. In fact, I always wanted the fun colored paper pads when I was a kid, but they were more expensive. So, nope. Not in our house. haha But I was fine with the 3 ringed spiral paper pads if they had cool designs on the cover and they were usually cheaper than the fun colored paper.

Something about the next scene has always bugged me. Rory gets off the bus (multiple times) and is carrying so many bags of books. But where does she put it all? When she's in school there is no way her locker can hold all of that and when she comes out of class she only has one extra bag with her other than her backpack. Where have all the book bags gone? I think she had 6 total including her small lunch looking bag.

I find it funny now how Lane is eating a rice cake and Rory has a Snickers bar and she gives it to her because when Rory asks "what is that?" Lane replies, "Twelve calories." There was a day when I would choose the Snickers bar. But now that I don't eat processed sugar except for the occasional piece of dark chocolate, I would never go for the candy bar. And oddly enough, I eat a TON of rice cakes and actually really like them. What has happened to me????? I even now agree with Mrs. Kim that it is chocolate covered death. haha I guess I am getting old.

The parent-teacher meeting just shows us that kids do get their bullying from their surroundings (ie parents). Those parents in that room are so uptight and rude. I would so feel like Lorelai in that room.

I take offense to Lorelai saying that nothing can be more embarrassing for Rory than the one time she admitted she liked Saved By the Bell. I love that show. Sure, it's awful and cheesy, but that's the awesomeness of it. I will always be a SBTB fan!

Hello! Sookie! Use different spoons to taste! I hate it on TV shows and movies when they taste something and then put the spoon right back in the dish. Here she feeds Lorelai from 3 different bowls with the same big spoon and then shoves the spoon in one of the bowls as she walks away. Hello! Food safety #1! And why would the restaurant critic mention his server had a goatee? I suppose it is possible, but I am not sure why that would even matter unless he was an amazing server and he didn't get his name and wanted to give him kudos. But seriously, get the name!

Rory and Lorelai wake up late and Rory has to drive herself to school. However, Rory isn't technically 16 yet. So unless the driving age in Connecticut is 15, she is driving illegally. Which it isn't. In fact, in Connecticut you can't even get a permit until age 16. I am assuming it was like this when this show aired. I don't think it has changed. Then she gets hit by a deer. I also get that she's compassionate and cares about the deer (I would be the same), but who gets out of the car to look for the deer when she's already running late? I would go back later after school.

I have always wondered how Lorelai got to the school. Obviously, someone had to have dropped her off, but we will never know. Not that it is important to the story at all, I have just always wondered. Cab? Sookie? Michel? Someone else?

Lorelai's outburst in the headmaster's office is awesome. I could totally see myself fighting like that if I had a kid in that situation. At the end of the episode, we get a glimpse in Lorelai's eye of what is to become of her and Max.

Gilmore girls: Season 1 Episode 3 Kill Me Now

Rory and Richard go golfing.

This opening dinner scene has always cracked me up. First of all, it starts off explaining the history of Emily and all of the maids she rotates in and out. Plus, Lorelai does have a point with Anton and Sofia. How DO you mix up those two? Lauren's delivery of these lines is fantastic. It's always been one of my favorite openings. Then we have the introduction to.....the dead Grandmother Lorelai. Which, as we know from a few episodes later that she is not dead. And although they never state that she has passed, they use phrases like "WAS my mother" and "yes she WAS."

Rory is definitely not athletically inclined. I have never heard of a school forcing you to choose a sport. I guess they do that instead of a regular gym class? At any rate, we have Emily forcing Richard to take Rory golfing, which neither of them seems to want to do. But I found it funny that Richard was SO against it. He seems to like Rory so much and be amazed by her all of the time, you would think he would want to share whatever he could with her. But I guess a man going to the country club to golf is the last thing he wants to share with his teenage granddaughter.

The wedding at the Inn. Twins marrying twins. Is there anything weirder? Does anyone know of this happening to anyone??

Richard saying that Rory would rather be at the mall is hilarious and shows how much he really doesn't know her yet. Of course, the golf outing for Emily is all about showing Rory off to their "friends" at the club. But why does she have to buy Rory such an ugly hat? There are better golf hats out there. You would think Emily, of all people, would have better taste than that!

It's embarrassing to admit, but until this episode of Gilmore girls, I 1. had no idea what/where Fez was and 2. didn't know what odious meant. Thank you, GG for giving me knowledge.

Sean Gunn's second appearance. Although he doesn't have a name in this episode, they just call him "this guy." I know that he wasn't an original character and was written into the show permanently later, but it's weird to watch these early episodes knowing that Kirk grew up in Stars Hollow and everyone knows who he is yet no one knows who he is in these.

Back in the diner, Lorelai learns that Rory had a good time with her Grandfather at the club. I don’t know why Luke ends up being surprised that Lorelai doesn’t eat/want her food. They always order and then leave full plates on the table. I don't know how much food they actually consume. I did read (I believe in Lauren's book) that they had spit buckets for in between takes. If you watch closely, Alexis especially will take the TINIEST bites of food. I don't blame her. Think if you were a character that ate all the time and had to take multiple takes. You wouldn't want to eat the food either! Plus I have heard that the dinner scenes at the Gilmore house the actual food tasted awful.

I love that they are out on the porch reading and doing homework. I desperately want a house that has a big porch like theirs.

If you pay attention you will see that Sookie always has colored band-aids on her fingers. As a clumsy girl myself, I can relate. I also love the relationship between Jackson and Sookie. Although it is still just a business relationship at this point, they are so hilarious together and are relationship goals.

I can understand where Lorelai is coming from being weirded out that Rory is bonding with her parents. If my family would have been just a little different, this could have easily have been me and my mom. She always felt disconnected from her family growing up and is very independent like Lorelai. She had me when she was 19 and she worked her ass off to make sure I was provided for. If her parents would have been a tad more normal (yes comparatively the Gilmores are normal haha) and rich, it’s possible things would have been just like this for us.

Gilmore girls: Season 1 Episode 2 The Lorelais' First Day at Chilton

Rory's first day at Chilton.

Starting off an episode with XTC is the way to go. A lot of people don't know that band. But having grown up in Southern California with the start of the World Famous KROQ which played bands like Oingo Boingo, The Cure, the B52's, and XTC, I was well acquainted. I could appreciate the pop culture reference. Maybe I need to start a Pop Culture Section at the end of each of these.

I gotta say, I would also buy a clock because it was cute and furry, so I can't fault Lorelai for the alarm clock.

Okay, so despite the fact that they are now filming on the WB lot, they still used driving shots from the pilot. As they are driving out of town to go to Chilton, it's a shot of them leaving that town in Canada that they filmed. I am sure they just didn't want to reshoot if they didn't have to, but it is just a weird thing I noticed that kind of bugs me because I don't think we ever see that shot again of the "Gelston House" which appears to be an inn or B&B of some sort. It's odd how the shots are pieced together as if it is just at the edge of downtown Stars Hollow.

I admire the fact that Rory makes her mom go with her into school despite how she is dressed because most kids would say "Don't you dare get out of the car looking like that." She is confident enough to not be embarrassed by her just for her.

Emily mentions Headmaster Charleston's wife, Bitty Charleston from future mentions in episodes about the DAR. But never, later on, is it mentioned that she is related to Hanlan. At least not that I have ever been able to find. I also don't believe we EVER meet Bitty.

Rory makes a joke to the Headmaster about the debate team being missing from her resume. Which of course, she ends up on with Paris in the future episodes. Hanlan also mentions Emily's parties and the infamous "lobster puffs" but as every huge Gilmore girls fan knows, in future episodes, Emily is always obsessing about the SALMON puffs at her parties as people come to expect them.

Miss Patty's always seems to have dance classes during the day when the kids should be in school. I have never understood this. That is more popular now for serious dancers that compete and home school, but at age 5-8 I highly doubt that in a small town like this they are serious dancers being homeschooled. Lorelai has just come from dropping Rory off at school and then walks by Miss Patty's dance school and a class of young kids learning baton is happening. Totally overlooked.

The scene where Rory opens her stuck locker and bumps into Paris and Paris drops the project drives me crazy. No student would just leave the broken project in the hallway. They would pick up the broken pieces and take that into class to show that they had done the project and it got messed up. Even the proudest and stuck up of students would never just leave it in the hallway.

Here we have the first appearance of Sean Gunn as Mic prior to him becoming Kirk as a recurring character. He plays the DSL installation guy that Emily orders for Lorelai and Rory that Lorelai refuses. We see him another time or two before he takes on Kirk. This was a good choice, in my opinion. They must have liked him so much they wrote a part for him on the show. Kirk ends up becoming one of the most beloved characters on the show.

Only the second episode and they already mention Lorelai and Luke. For a character that wasn't supposed to exist originally, they make it apparent from the beginning that there is something between them. So glad they did!

Gilmore girls: Season 1 Episode 1 Pilot

You know when you watch a show and have all of these thoughts and questions in your head? Well, this is that. Keep in mind I have seen all episodes a minimum of 30 times so there might be spoilers. (This includes going into the Year In the Life episodes even though I haven't decided if I am going to "review" those yet or not). This post might end up being a little all over the place as I 1. determine how I am going to structure this and 2. introduce all the characters in the first episode. This isn't a synopsis or even a review. Just my thoughts.

Here we go!

Stars Hollow looks so much busier in the pilot. I believe they filmed it in Canada in a small town outside Toronto which turns out to be pretty darn close to the lot they use for the series. And the inside of Luke's, although it changes a bit, is VERY close to the Warner Bros set.

Here we are in Luke's in the first scene. Rory sits down and requests lipgloss. Does any other big fan think this is weird? As we move along in the series lipgloss is the LAST thing you would expect Rory to request. Although, this is the pilot and as we all know MANY things change after a pilot is picked up.

Lorelai tells Joey (the guy passing through Stars Hollow that hits on both Lorelai and Rory at separate moments) that Rory is 16. As we know, there is an episode a handful in where she celebrates her 16th birthday. This being the beginning of the school year and her birthday being in October, we know she is actually only 15 which makes the guy hitting on her even creepier.

Independence Inn.
Alex Borstein enters as Drella the harpist. She was actually the original Sookie but when the show got picked up there was something else she couldn't get released from and had to be replaced. I think it was her MadTv contract. Alex is an amazing actress so I know why Amy Sherman-Palladino wanted to fit her in somewhere. She actually pops up in later episodes as Miss Celine the "fashion coordinator" as I like to call her. At the time the show started, Alex was also married to Jackson in real life (who has the actual name Jackson. Which I always wondered if Amy just called him Jackson because she liked it or if it was the character's original name). In fact, I believe they were married for the whole duration of the series, only divorcing a few years ago. As much as I love Alex (especially on the Marvelous Mrs. Masel) I cannot imagine anyone else playing Sookie other than Melissa McCarthy.

Introduction of Lane Kim.
Odd tidbit if you didn't already know... Keiko was 27 years old when she played 16-year-old Lane. We have an Andrea Zuckerman on our hands! haha But in all seriousness, unlike Andrea/Gabriel on 90210, Keiko could actually pass for a teenager.

Introduction of Sookie.
Finally, on a TV show/Movie, the chef is actually keeping their hair back! As someone that went to culinary school, this has always bothered me. So many shows where they have their hair down. The health department would be dinging them big time! (They do this in current culinary competition shows, too, especially baking, and it drives me nuts). This is also the first time that Lorelai and Sookie having a plan to open their own inn is mentioned.

Introduction of Mrs. Kim.
Clearly, this was a reshoot as the outdoor shots of Rory and Lane walking into Kim's antiques were definitely shot in the WB lot. Although, as they walk in and the camera is inside you see another sign that says "The Glass Chimney: Kim's Art & Antiques." It appears that they reshot the outdoor scenes and left the indoor scenes from the original shooting. The inside of Kim's antiques looks different so I think I cracked it. Mrs. Kim has many fantastic one-liners across the series but one of my favorite Mrs. Kim lines of the series happens in this scene. "Boys don't like funny girls."

Back in the inn kitchen.
Sookie accidentally hits a sous chef with what appears to be a cast-iron skillet. They just ignore it and he gets up all disoriented. Cracks me up. "Rory's going to Chilton. Rory's going to Chilton." Cue stove fire. Oh, Sookie.

Michel.
One of my favorite quotes of his of all time. "People are particularly stupid today, I cannot talk to any more of them." I actually have quoted this many times in my life.

I still wonder if Lorelai and Rory's house in the pilot is the same as the WB lot set. It is SO close to the house on the inside (and the outdoor scene is definitely from the WB lot house). But did they do construction to the set after the indoor scenes of the pilot or were some of the scenes shot elsewhere? There are some areas of the entry and living room that don't seem to fit the house later in the series. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

Intro: the Grandparents.
Definitely not the same house that they use later on. Were there any better choices for Emily and Richard? I think not. They picked the perfect actors. Edward Herrmann is also one of my favorites.

Introduction to Dean.
When she first meets him he knows movies and reads. Somehow, as the series progresses, he seems to get stupider. Not as much as the older brother on Boy Meets World (man did that character lose brain cells over the years), but they intro him as a lot smarter in the pilot and episodes moving forward at the beginning. This role was also originally played by someone else. It was an actor I am not familiar with, Nathan Wetherington. Again, I think this was a fantastic change. Jared Padalecki was the right change to make.

Lorelai and Rory's fight about Dean. "Does he have a motorcycle? Because if you are going to throw your life away, he better have a motorcycle." Very important to remember this quote from Lorelai as the episodes go on.****

Dinner with the Grandparents.
This is the first time Christopher is mentioned. Richard mentions Christopher is in California with an internet startup. I don't recall him ever mentioning an internet startup even though I believe he mentions California. Maybe this will be confirmed as I move forward. These scenes with Richard crack me up. First, he hands over a newspaper to Rory as silence in the room takes over, and then as Emily and Lorelai fight, he falls asleep at the table. But I never understood why he took that dig at Lorelai's intelligence. They always talk about how smart she is and how she could have done more but yet he tells Rory he takes after her father because he's so smart. I understand there needed to be conflict but I was always confused as to why it was a dig at her intelligence because they are mad she did things on her own. This is more attributed to Lorelai's stubbornness and independence, not intelligence. In fact, Emily even mentions Lorelai's "brains and talent" during their fight.

Back at Luke's.
The first inclination that Lorelai and Luke might like each other. Originally Luke wasn't a character at all and the diner owner was a woman. Curious to know how the series would have gone without Luke. I think the dynamic between these two characters was the extra the show needed. The "will they or won't they."

As someone that was born to a woman who was a teenager (my mother was only a couple of years older than Lorelai when she had me), I can relate so much to this show. It became a show my Mom and I could watch together. We have always been very close, freakishly close as we have gotten older. She's my best friend. Just like Lorelai and Rory.

Although I LOVE the Carol King and her daughter singing "Where You Lead," this episode ends with the perfect song. "My Little Corner of the World."

Quarantine: Why not try something new?

As most of you are probably doing (at least I hope), I am self-isolating for hopes of preservation. Like most of you doing the same, work has been terribly slow (although, thankful to still have a job.... for now) and I have been going nuts trying to keep myself busy. These are weird times for us all and I know I have been trying to do and watch things that keep me in a happy mood. With my anxiety at an all-time high, I wanted to find something to help occupy my time and keep my mind off the craziness of the world.

For a long time (years probably) I have been wanting to do something different here. I haven't blogged in over 2 years, but I have had this project in my brain since before that. Today I decided why shouldn't I start it while I have the time? What is the project you ask? Well, it involves two of my obsessions. TV and Gilmore girls. (And yes, girls is in lower case).

For any huge Gilmore girls fan, you have watched every episode at least a dozen times. Well, I have seen each episode over 30 times at least. I have noticed weird things, inconsistencies if you will. I have learned pop culture references I did not know about. I have seen famous faces before they were famous. So, I have decided to go episode by episode and blog about each one, pointing out all the things that I notice.

Now, this might not be something for someone watching the show for the first time. There will for sure be some spoilers as I compare things from earlier episodes to later episodes. This is also not done out of negativity; it is done out of love. Gilmore girls is my absolute favorite show of all time. As a huge fan (I have even competed in trivia events on the subject) that has seen the episodes over and over and over, I have noticed some weird things and I just want to share. Many huge fans will have noticed the same things, I am sure.

My love for this show and time on my hands have led me here. I hope you enjoy it! I don't know how often I plan on posting. Hopefully, at least once a week maybe more. I am really looking forward to this journey and I hope you are, too!
